HANDS-ON: De Aegir Instruments CD-2 (Concept Diver 2)

The story behind how Aegir Instruments came to be is one of the most compelling and authentic I’ve heard for a long time – certainly one of the best I’ve heard from a brand without a marketing department. Todd Caldwell, the man behind the brand, is a commercial diver – and the inspiration for Caldwell to go out on a limb and make his own dive watch was hours of decompressing in a diving bell, with little to do but stare at his watch (I asked – it was a Panerai, and yes – he’s still got it).

Caldwell wasn’t happy with what he saw, or with any of the watches on the market for that matter. He wanted something he could wear at depth that wouldn’t look like a tuna can on the wrist, jutting out from a suit cuff. So decided to design his own, initially just for himself and a few diving buddies. Out of this process came two designs: The CD-1, forms the core of the Aegir Instruments collection, and the CD-2 – a limited edition of 100 pieces that has spared no expense in the quest for quality.

The CD-2 emerged because it turns out that people expect certain things of a dive watch. Water resistance is one, and a turning bezel is another. Somewhat ironically the classic dive watch bezel was superfluous to Caldwell’s needs as a diver. His dives, taken in diving bells, were measured in hours, not minutes. He’s only ever used a bezel to time how long it takes to boil an egg. But, people wanted a divers’ bezel – so Aegir delivered.

The CD-2 is quite a chunk of steel, with brushed 42mm case (with a helium escape valve) that wears a lot larger than you might expect thanks to that super wide bezel. This bezel is great, with simple numerals and hash marks that don’t try and fancy things up too much, and a luminova filled triangle at 12. It has a little bit of play in it, compared to the Rolex and Omega watches we happened to have lying around, but other than that it held up pretty well against the big boys.

EDITOR'S PICK: De IWC Portugieser Jaarlijkse Kalender, onze jongenblauw

Het verhaal in een seconde

De hoofdrol in de IWC's 2015-opstelling is het Portugieser Annual Calendar, een verzekerde nieuwe aanpak op een oude favoriet.

De grote vraag

Zal mensen een horloge willen, dat is meer dan een volledige kalender, maar niet helemaal eeuwig?

IWC heeft 2015 uitgeroepen tot het jaar van de Portugieser, en het stermodel in de volledig vernieuwde (en opnieuw gebrandmerkde) lijn is de Jaarlijkse Kalender. De Jaarlijkse Kalender is een groot, mooi horloge met de eerste jaarlijkse kalendercomplicatie van het merk en een gloednieuwe interne beweging.

Dit is een indrukwekkend horloge op veel niveaus, en paradoxaal genoeg is het grootste ding daarbij misschien het moeilijkst te formuleren. De beste omschrijving die ik kan krijgen na het dragen voor een week, is dat de jaarlijkse agenda een sterke persoonlijkheid heeft. Sommige horloges kunnen alle goede dingen hebben, maar nog steeds koud en berekend. Niet zo deze Portugieser, alle elementen (en zelfs sommige van de quirks) komen samen om een ​​horloge te creëren dat je niet kan helpen, maar geniet van het dragen. En (spoiler alert) dat is wat het zo'n goed horloge maakt.

De zaak

Er is geen ontsnapping dat de Portugieser een beest is in termen van zijn grootte. Voor iets sportief kan de 44.2mm case breedte onder de radar verschuiven, maar gezien de dressier look van de Portugieser, dat percentage zet het stevig aan het bovenste uiteinde van het grootte spectrum. Dat klopt wel, maar de gewaagde, eigentijdse (toch historisch nauwkeurige) grootte is een groot deel van zijn beroep. Als hetzelfde horloge op 38mm inklokte, zou het een totaal andere (en ik vermoed veel minder aantrekkelijke) propositie zijn.

Wat goed is om te zien is dat, hoewel het groot is, is IWC veel moeite gedaan om ervoor te zorgen dat het meer schoonheid en minder beest is. Het kristal is opgewaardeerd naar een hoogwaardige glazen doos saffier, waardoor de wijzerplaat een dieper, meer evenwichtige uitstraling geeft. De dunne behuizing is concaaf, een slimme beetje optische trickery waardoor de zaak slanker wordt.

IN-DEPTH: Tudor's Black Bay Chrono - groter dan de som van zijn onderdelen?

De Black Bay wordt ingewikkeld en Tudor voegt een verrassende draai in de beweging toe ...

In de loop der jaren heeft Tudor hun beheersing van een bepaald genre van historisch revisionistische bricolage bewezen - uiteraard door hun fan-favoriete duiker, de machtige Black Bay. Met uitzondering van nu is dat straight-up duiker classificatie niet zo makkelijk zitten. De 36 en 41 modellen geven een aantrekkelijke aanraking, en de Chrono brengt een stevige dosis sportieve stijl aan de mix. Dus misschien is de echte vraag: gaat de pick-and-mix-aanpak, die Tudor zo goed met het relatief beperkte palet van de 'gewone' Black Bays doet - werken met dit ingewikkelder aanbod? En dan, natuurlijk, is er die beweging ...

De zaak

The 41mm steel case of the BB Chrono is at once familiar and unfamiliar. The shape and high, slab-like sides are classic Black Bay, but the additional pushers and tachymetre bezel are new to the family and quite unfamiliar. Except that they’re kind of not. If you punch “Tudor 79180” into Google you’ll find countless examples of the ‘Big Block’ chronograph, first introduced in 1976 (six years after their first chronograph, the Prince Oysterdate) which shares the engraved steel bezel and those fluted, screw-down chronograph pushers. So while the bezel and pushers may not be design details featured on recent Tudor watches, they’re certainly a prominent part of their history. One detail that’s a key part of the historic models but absent on this release is a crown guard. I understand it might be messing with the Black Bay design codes a little too much, but I really think that a crown guard would have given a more pleasing visual symmetry to the case design and a neater look to the chronograph pushers, especially when they’re fully unscrewed. The case is rated to 200m, as per usual.

The dial

Like the case, the dial of the BB Chrono is a mix of old and new. The snowflake hour hands are very much in evidence, although in a slightly slimmed down form to allow for greater chronograph legibility. The applied ‘dot’ markers are still on the scene too, though the baton-like 3,6,9, markers have disappeared, replaced by subdials and a date. The subdials – plainly printed and slightly recessed – are nicely executed and well proportioned. The left is running seconds and the right is a 45 minute counter. There’s a date at six, on a white disk neatly recessed in the matt black dial. And while many people find dates jarring, I actually think the pop of white adds some nice balance and works better than a lone, large hour marker would.
